Be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s SHINE® St. Petersburg Mural Festival scheduled for October 14 to 23, 2022.

This internationally recognized street art festival will bring 17 new murals to the art districts and surrounding neighborhoods of St. Petersburg’s downtown. The Festival, featuring some of the most highly respected local, regional, national, and international muralists, gives artists full creative expression to use the walls as canvas to illuminate the power of art in public spaces.

Since its inception in 2015, SHINE has created more than 100 murals throughout downtown and the surrounding arts districts.

The 2022 SHINE® Mural Festival Artist List of Muralists

Descriptions: St. Petersburg Arts Alliance (https://stpeteartsalliance.org/shine-mural-festival)

James Bullough

Is an American born artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. His studio paintings, and huge monumentally scaled site-specific murals combine delicately handled realistic portraiture with harsh graphic distortion and abstraction. Inspired by the gritty urban graffiti he saw as a young artist growing up in Washington, DC, Bullough harnessed its energy and edge while teaching himself more traditional realistic oil painting techniques by studying the Old Masters. Combining the momentum of the one and the technical precision of the other, his work is about staging compelling contrasts and juxtapositions. Whether working with spray paint on massive facades or oils in his studio, Bullough’s work strikes a delicate balance between realistic portraiture and stylized distortions, straddling the space between traditional and contemporary. Bullough’s studio work has been exhibited at numerous galleries, museums, and art fairs across the globe and with multiple sold out solo shows to his name his work continues to be in high demand. His murals can be found worldwide with landmark pieces in New Zealand, Sweden, France, Germany, The Ukraine, and throughout the US.

MadC

Nicknamed “The Mad One” for her enthusiastic approach to graffiti art, Claudia Walde works under the name MadC as a graffiti artist and painter based in Germany. Internationally recognized for her vibrant public works, MadC’s nearly 30-year career boasts murals across the world.

Ashley Cantero

Is a Tampa, FL native and artist who actively engages in the local art scene. Best known for her precise line work and bold female characters, her work embodies a profound energy that she defines as the “intense and complex emotional responses we have to the world around us.”

Ben Johnston, Canada

Ben Johnston is a multi-disciplinary artist from Cape Town, South Africa who specializes in custom typography for murals, advertising and public art, and consistently pushing the envelope in his field. Currently based in Toronto, Canada, he creates large-scale murals worldwide. His fine art pieces appear in exhibitions internationally and he speaks and paints live at numerous conferences. Whether executing a mural in a remote part of India or an animated artwork for an NFT auction, he aims to find a unique approach, drawing on inspirations from his travels.

Marina Capdevilla

Was born and raised in Barcelona, where she studied Fine Arts. She finished her studies at the prestigious Kooning Academy in Rotterdam where she took the first steps into street art. She took part in artist-in-residence programs in Italy, Mexico and Barcelona (2020). For the last eight years, she has painted murals in places like Florida, NYC, California, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, UK, Austria, Spain, Portugal and Croatia.

Reginald O’Neal (L.E.O.)

Reginald O’Neal (L.E.O.) began painting in 2012, soon meeting his friend and mentor, Alejandro Dorda, who would teach him classically. In 2014, L.E.O. took his first trip to Europe to complete murals in Austria, Norway, and Spain, as well as exhibit in a collective show alongside his teacher in Berlin, Germany. In the years since, Reggie has focused on canvas work, residencies, and murals that embody his community surroundings, experiences and beliefs.

Van Der Luc has participated in many group exhibitions and other museum curated shows throughout Tampa Bay.

Jeff Williams

Jeff Williams is a traditional sign painter who was born and raised in St. Petersburg, FL. An early exposure to mid-century design via his parents’ vintage shop had a lasting impact and is still prevalent in his work today. Most of his work is influenced by old hand drawn and painted letter forms, mid-century style illustrations, ‘50s advertising and packaging, as well as vintage tattoo flash. His aim is to preserve the rich visual identity of our city through traditional hand painted signage.

Graffiti Egypt

A Los Angeles born artist, Egypt highlights the use of portraiture as storytelling. As each human bears a unique story, she relishes in creating these stories using bold images and an underlying vibrancy that emphasizes the main subject. Egypt’s paintings consist of people and untold stories that deserved to be heard. Egypt currently resides and works out of Florida. She continues to work on numerous projects and commissions while exhibiting her artwork around the world.
