Bed Sheets – Thread Count and Fabrics

August 21, 2017 by Sharon Fennell Kennedy | St. Petersburg, FL: Pinellas County 1 Comment

When it’s time to buy sheets, do you equate a higher thread count with better quality?

You may be surprised to know that this is a common myth. While thread count – the measurement of threads that run vertically and horizontally in one square inch of fabric – is important, what is more important is the fabric.

According to Consumer Reports, there is no reason to pay extra for sheets with a thread count over 400, but it is worth your while to spend a little more on sheets made from the best cottons: Pima, Egyptian, or Supima, long-fiber cottons that weave into the softest, most comfortable sheets.

Understanding the basics about fabrics will help you to compare labels wisely and make an informed choice. Here is a guide to choosing the sheet that’s right for you.
Cotton is the most popular fabric used to make sheets because it is durable, easy to care for, breathable, soft and affordable. There are several different types of cotton.

  • Egyptian cotton is the most luxurious variety. This is what you’ll want if you’re shopping for super-soft, high-quality bed sheets. Egyptian cotton has extra-long fibers that create the softest, smoothest fabric.
  • Pima cotton is also known for its softness and natural sheen. It has medium to extra-long fibers that are ideal for bed sheets.
  • Supima® is a trademarked name for fibers and materials woven from 100% American Pima cotton.
  • Flannel is a staple for cold winter nights, flannel is cotton that’s been combed to fluff up the fibers, thus giving flannel its snuggly-warm qualities. Flannel’s quality is measured in ounces per square yard, rather than thread count.

Experts agree that 100% cotton make the bed best linens and recommend a thread count from 200 to 400. These linens feel soft to the skin and absorb body sweat to keep you cool while you are sleeping. White bed sheets are preferred by hoteliers because they signify luxury and a good night’s sleep. Sweet dreams!
