As the mascot of Stand Up for Animals, an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter in Westerly, Rhode Island, Miso is one lucky cat.
A few years ago she was surrendered to the shelter. Being an independent thinker and diva of sorts, Miso let everyone know she didn’t enjoy life in the open sanctuary room or being around other cats.
Accommodating staff decided to set her up in a cage in the reception area. It took only one week for Miso to charm visitors, staff and volunteers alike – the cage became history.
Today, Miso spends her time in one of two offices, depending on the time of day. She has the sweetest personality and isn’t afraid of the dogs. Her fellow human office mates say she loves catnip, chasing toys and being brushed. Her pampered lifestyle is well deserved – Miso exudes love and is loved in return.
Stand Up for Animals:
- Mission: To maintain a state-of-the-art animal shelter, adoption center and regional outreach facility to promote the health and welfare of lost or abandoned pets and to educate and assist those who care for them.
- Vision: To create a place where animals will be treated with compassion and dignity; where suffering and abuse will not be tolerated; where education and understanding will play an integral role in eliminating overpopulation, animal cruelty and abandonment; where every possible effort is made to return an animal to its owner, or to place that animal in a new, safe and loving home.

Miso is a great reminder that shelter pets make the best pets. We don’t remember why she was surrendered to us but we’re all very happy she was! I have to cut this short, she’s telling me it’s time for her afternoon feeding and spa treatment…..
