Have you started your spring cleaning yet? In many households, homeowners, either by accident or design, forget to include the garage on their “to-do” lists.
A neat, organized, walkable garage is a must if you are selling home. Just as I have written several articles on the importance of decluttering the interior of your house, paying attention to your garage is of significant importance as well.
Here are a few tips you may find helpful as you tackle this space
- Plan Ahead: Figure out where you will store items such as the lawnmower and garden tools during the garage makeover. Do you have a basement or shed that you could temporarily tuck these items away in? Another option would be to rent a small storage unit during the duration of the cleaning process.
- Categorize: Think of how you will want to organize all of the items in your garage. Examples of such groups could include lawn care, car care, and sporting equipment. Ideally, you will want to store like-kind items together to make it easier to find when you need them.
- Paint: Giving your garage walls a fresh coat of paint can really make the atmosphere cleaner and fresher. You may even want to paint the garage floor to clean up the space. Be sure to use an exterior paint considering that the garage space is frequently exposed to elements of the outdoors.
- Add Storage: When you have everything moved out of your garage, it’s the perfect opportunity to add some storage. Consider a workbench for projects and storing tools or adding cubbies to organize shoes.
