Just when you think you’ve heard it all in the newest “must have” in the luxury home marketplace, you might be surprised to learn tunnels – yes, those mysterious underground passages – are emerging as the latest unique amenity.
Tunnels, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal (6.5.2015) are sexier than media rooms and wine cellars. Luxury homeowners see tunnels as a one-of-a-kind selling point with that intangible wow factor.
Featured in the article is the estate of Tom Gerrard, a retired entrepreneur. His property is located in Manalapan, FL, in the town of Lantana. Mr. Gerrard’s mansion boasts 40,000 square feet and, you guessed it, a 70 foot long tunnel under South Ocean Blvd. It took 3 years to build at a cost of $1 million. Its primary purpose is to accommodate his grandchildren and family pets so they do not have to cross the busy road to get to the beach. The tunnel even has a stereo sound system!
The property is currently listed for $29.5 million. Got offers?
