St Petersburg Preservation’s Historic Walking Tours

March 25, 2013 by Estelia Mesimer Leave a Comment

preservationWant to learn more about St. Petersburg’s rich history and take a leisurely walk as well? Held every Saturday from October through April, St. Petersburg Preservation’s 2012-2013 historic walking tour season provides insight about the heritage of different neighborhoods and structures around the city.

Aside from the Historic Kenwood tour, each walk beings in front of Central Café & Organics at 243 Central Avenue next to the historic Detroit Hotel. The Historic Kenwood tour launches at the Craftsman House at 2955 Central Avenue.

Tours start at 10 a.m. and are free, but a $5 donation is appreciated from non-members.

There are four in-depth walking tours led by knowledgeable volunteer guides. Participants not only see buildings first-hand, but they also learn about the city’s history illustrated by riveting stories.

The Original Downtown Historic Walking Tour is held on the first Saturday of the month. Guests meander through historic downtown St. Pete between Central Avenue and 4th Avenue North encountering grand hotels, stately churches and architectural treasures like the Snell Arcade, the Open Air Post Office, and the Veillard residence.

On the second Saturday of the month, the Waterfront Tour treats participants to stories about civic visionaries who transformed the bayfront into one of the largest waterfront park systems in the nation.

The North by Old Northeast Tour is offered on third third Saturday of each month. This tour provides the variety of walking through historic downtown along a stretch of waterfront and along the shaded streets of the Old Northeast neighborhood. Participants get the opportunity to explore a renovated home and the tour typically concludes at the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel.

The Historic Kenwood Tour takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month. The tour debuts at the Craftsman House, which is presently a gallery and café, and was the original model home for the Kenwood neighborhood. Historic Kenwood is known for its plethora of bungalows, and participants are taken through a restored home. After the tour, guests can have a drink or lunch on the front deck at the Craftsman House.
